HILLCREST STATE GAME AREA
This property was part of the Howell Tubercular Sanitorium. The facility was built in 1907 as a tuberculouses housing facility but then was taken over by the Department of Mental Health and became a facility to house the mentally ill. The facility was closed in 1982 and demolished 1985.

Our battle started at 9:00 am. The DNR had a 20 yard dumpster delivered in the main parking lot and our soldiers got to work right away to fill it. Illegal dumping had taken place in the old north parking lot, that has now been properly disposed. Litter from the road has been picked up and thrown in the dumpster. We walked the property and removed remnants of carpet from the marsh, car hoods from the woods, tires from the swamp and the deer carcasses that littered the parking lot. It is remarkable, the work our team can get done in such a short amount of time. By 1:00 we were finishing up and leaving the area in a better condition than which it was found on this day. GREAT WORK SOLDIERS!!

There was somebody that wasn't happy about our efforts. The field mouse living in a boot found in one of the trash piles. Below is a photo of some of us trying to capture it in the back of a pickup. And the photo of the mouse, now homeless. We are pretty sure it will be able to find new residence in some of the natural elements of Hillcrest SGA.
